SW France

South West France is known for the beautiful sunflower fields (tournesol) and the world over for its wines. A drive around the vineyards of Bordeaux is like looking at a great wine list - Latour, Petrus, Mouton-Rothschild, Margaux, D'Yquem, Pomerol, St. Emilion.

And it is fitting that the greatest wines of the world should come from this region because the area is also the home of some truly fine produce to match them at the table, including foie gras and truffles and confit de canard.

It's main river, the Gironde, has been the entrance to the area for centuries of ocean-going crafts, and now the arrival of the autoroute and international air travel is opening up the region further. And yet, despite its new found accessibility, it still retains a sense of splendid isolation, of a world gone by and of better times.
